When we meet real tragedies in life, we can react in two ways – either by losing hope and falling into self-destructive habits or by using the challenge to find our inner strength. When something untoward happens, we go through phases of denial and depression before coming to terms with it.
‘Waiting’ is a soulful tale of the struggles of the characters played by Naseeruddin Shah and Kalki Koechlin to cope with the near-to-death situation their life partners are into. While one has, over a period of time, learnt to face it with composure and fortitude, the other one is totally shattered with practically no one around for emotional support. The point is how lonely are we when there is a need to deal with tough real life situations despite being connected to or followed by thousands in the virtual world.
This movie is worth watching for the stunning performance of Naseer and Kalki. The matter of debate between them is how empowered are we to decide on how long someone should live if his/her chances of returning to a life of dignity are slim. Something remarkable about this movie is that while it discusses a lot about various aspects of love and life, it is never didactic.
Regardless of whatever happens in life – poor health, pain, loss of dear ones – we need to move on and wait for life to bloom again……
